The salmon fishing season in the Kamchatka Territory has concluded with yields falling significantly below initial projections. On September 12, the regional regulatory commission for anadromous fish halted all commercial and traditional harvesting, along with net-based recreational fishing. This ban covers the extraction of salmon and char across all fishing areas, including the West Bering Sea, Karaginskaya, Petropavlovsk-Commander, West Kamchatka, and Kamchatka-Kuril zones, as well as their inflowing river basins. Recreational fishing using a standard rod and line remains the only permitted exception.
The final harvest in Kamchatka totaled 55,700 metric tons, reaching less than half of the forecasted 117,400 metric tons. Pink salmon constituted the primary catch – over 20,000 metric tons – followed by sockeye and chum salmon at 17,800 and 14,300 metric tons respectively. Yields for coho, chinook, and masu salmon were statistically minor. The Karaginskaya subzone demonstrated the highest productivity, accounting for nearly half of the total regional volume.
Despite the substantial shortfall against target metrics, Kamchatka maintained its position as the leading fish-producing region in the country. The territory accounted for 58.7 percent of the total Far Eastern salmon harvest, which reached an estimated 94,900 metric tons. This sharp reduction in catch volumes for the current season is not isolated to Russia but represents a broader trend across the Pacific Basin, with identical declines recorded in the coastal waters of the United States and Canada.
Global climate change is driving this decline in harvest numbers. Rising water temperatures in the oceans directly impact the marine food web and force shifts in the traditional migration routes of wild salmon. Confronted with a rapidly altering ecosystem in the North Pacific, the fishing industry must develop new operational strategies. The current environmental conditions necessitate immediate adaptation measures to conserve valuable fish populations and ensure the long-term viability of the commercial fishing sector without causing further ecological degradation.
