A photography exhibition dedicated to the Commander Islands opens at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky International Airport on Monday, August 24. Situated at the convergence of lithospheric plates and ocean currents, the archipelago features an ecosystem distinct to the region. The territory supports major marine mammal rookeries, extensive seabird colonies, whale migration routes, and salmon spawning grounds – all of which contribute to its significant ecological value.
The exhibition displays photographs taken by the staff of the Commander Islands National Park. Through long-term observation of the remote archipelago, the photographers captured candid moments of local wildlife in their natural habitat rather than staged compositions. These images document the biodiversity of the region and serve as a visual record of ongoing environmental conservation efforts. The collection includes observational photography from park contributors, including Evgeny Mamaev, highlighting the natural environment protected within the reserve boundaries.
