In the Kamchatka Territory, the number of bear visits to humans may decrease significantly in the coming years. This was reported by representatives of the organization “Ecology Kamchatka” with reference to the forecasts of experts, according to “41 Region”.
In 2024, clubfoots became more frequent in populated areas due to problems with the food supply and availability of landfills near cities, villages and farms. As a result, according to official data, more than 420 bears had to be shot.
“… the number of bears in a territory that is disadvantaged in terms of food resources in 2024 may decrease by 30-50%, which will automatically make the next 3-4 years calm regarding the bears’ visits to people,” experts say.
However, if the death rate of bears turns out to be not as bad as it seems so far, and salmon stocks are projected to be only 200 thousand tons, there will be problems with plant foods due to the low snow winter, there is a chance that the situation of last year with increased activity may repeat, albeit on a smaller scale.
“We believe that the usual readiness of special response teams for the release of dangerous animals to the settlements of the Kamchatka Territory should be maintained,” representatives of the Ecology Kamchatka organization noted.
According to environmentalists, more than 10 brown bears have already been removed from their habitat this winter. At the same time, it is noted that the animals are very thin and dirty – that is, they lay down in dens, but were disturbed or woke up from hunger, and then left the dens and went to look for food.
