Researchers at Kamchatka State University have identified the most promising geothermal springs for the development of the regional health resort industry. The primary resources for creating new balneological facilities are the thermal waters of the Ketkinskoye field and the Ozernovskiye springs. These sites demonstrated the highest potential among the seven known hydrogen sulfide water manifestations on the peninsula.
The distinct properties of Kamchatka’s springs are linked to their geological location near active volcanoes, providing the water with high temperatures and a rare mineral composition. The Ozernovskiye springs are characterized by low mineralization and are currently used primarily for unregulated recreation. The Ketkinskoye field, operational since 1987, stands out for its high temperatures and hydrogen sulfide saturation. The water at this site already holds an official medical certification and supplies open-air baths at a local recreational facility.
The assessment of balneological resources was conducted using the archives of Far Eastern research institutes. Chemical analysis of the samples was performed by specialists from the Kamchatgeologiya laboratory and the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. These results will form the basis for future clinical trials designed to integrate hydrogen sulfide water treatments into standard medical practice. Further scientific work will transition to the Discoverers’ Campus currently under construction – specialized infrastructure is being prepared there to study the natural resources of the region.
