Russia’s Green Push: State and Volunteers Clean Kamchatka Lake

In a display of coordinated environmental action, a major cleanup initiative was recently held in Russia’s Far East on the shores of Kultuchnoye Lake. Located in the Kamchatka Peninsula, a region globally renowned for its dramatic volcanoes and unique ecosystems, the lake is a popular recreational spot for both locals and tourists, making the effort to preserve its natural state particularly significant.

The event showcased a notable collaboration between various levels of government and civil society. It brought together officials from Russia’s federal Ministry of Natural Resources, who were on a working visit to the peninsula, alongside their regional counterparts, experts from the acclaimed “Volcanoes of Kamchatka” Nature Park, and representatives from the Russian Geographical Society.

Demonstrating a strong community-led component, the cleanup also saw enthusiastic participation from local environmental NGOs, volunteers, and families. This grassroots involvement underscores a growing public engagement with ecological issues in the region. To encourage continued participation, the most active volunteers were recognized with commemorative gifts branded with the event’s national campaign logo.

This local cleanup is a part of the much larger, nationwide “Water of Russia” campaign, which has been annually conducted across all municipalities of the Kamchatka region since 2017. The campaign itself is a key pillar of Russia’s federal project on “Ecological Well-being,” signaling a strategic, state-level priority to protect the nation’s vast water resources and address environmental pollution.
