Russian Mining Firm Champions Kamchatka’s Iconic King Salmon

A major Russian mining company has made a significant commitment to environmental conservation in the country’s Far East, releasing thousands of juvenile Chinook salmon into the Bolshaya River basin in Kamchatka. This initiative by Areal, a prominent player in the region’s resource sector, underscores a growing corporate responsibility trend towards preserving globally vital ecosystems and their iconic species. The release, part of the “Life to Kamchatka Salmon!” charitable project, saw Areal contribute 14,000 young fish, marking it as the first private organization in the Kamchatka region to make such a substantial effort in Chinook salmon restoration.

The ceremonial release took place at the Malkinsky Salmon Hatchery, operated by the North-Eastern Branch of the Federal Agency for Fishery (Glavrybvod), on May 14th. This particular event contributed to a total of 20,500 Chinook salmon juveniles introduced into the river system that day. Known colloquially as “King Salmon” or “Royal Salmon” for its impressive size and culinary value, the Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is a cornerstone species for the Pacific ecosystem and a key indicator of river health.

Alexey Voitov, Managing Director of the Gold of Kamchatka Group, a holding company that includes Areal, emphasized the critical nature of these conservation efforts. “Industrial harvesting of Chinook salmon in the Bolshaya River basin has been prohibited for many years due to rampant poaching, making a successful catch a rare event for even recreational anglers,” Voitov stated. He added, “Our participation in restoring this population is an investment not only in preserving Kamchatka’s unique biodiversity but also in developing angling tourism. We view both as vital for our region and are committed to continuing our support for this project.”

Areal’s commitment is not new. In 2022, the group invested 7 million rubles into the rearing of juvenile salmon, resulting in the release of roughly 140,000 Chinook. This represented a record contribution among private companies in Kamchatka towards the restoration of the royal salmon population, demonstrating a sustained and impactful engagement.

Areal stands as the largest representative of the mining industry in the Kamchatka Krai, with operations spanning several districts across the peninsula. Employing over 3,000 individuals, the company maintains a broad philanthropic program beyond environmental conservation. Its initiatives include organizing the Kamchatka Krai Mining Industry Festival and funding the construction of the “Dachny” Park in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, showcasing a comprehensive approach to corporate social responsibility that balances economic activity with community and environmental welfare in a strategically important global region.
