In the north of the peninsula, reindeer pastures remain covered with thick ice crusts, the regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told Kamchatka.Today.
According to the Kamchatka Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, in the third decade of March, in the vicinity of the village of Tilichiki, Olyutorsky district, the thickness of snow crusts reached dangerous values.
In April and early March, the situation did not change, the ice crusts reached a thickness of up to 55 millimeters. According to forecasts, the dangerous phenomenon will persist during the second decade of May, which may lead to the death of deer from starvation. They just can’t get to yagel, which is under the snow.
Recall that in April 2021, there was a mass death of reindeer near the village of Ust-Khairyuzovo. The cause of the deaths of more than 350 animals was starvation. The thickness of the snow cover reached 40-50 centimeters, and there was water and ice under the snow.
