Kamchatka volunteers rescue seals from plastic and fishing nets
A meeting with a volunteer of the Friends of the Ocean marine mammal assistance group was held at the visit center of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, an environmental protection agency told Kamchatka.Today.
Valentina Kosova spoke about her experience of saving marine mammals on Seal Island. It is located 12 kilometers southwest of Cape Patience on Sakhalin.
“Every year we witness tragedies: animals die entangled in plastic debris and fishing nets. Seals and cetaceans are particularly affected – they cannot free themselves from the deadly loops and slowly die: they drown or die from wounds,” said the volunteer.
She called on everyone to contribute to the protection of marine life.
“If you find looped debris on the shore, cut it up. This simple procedure deprives garbage of its main danger – the ability to maim living beings,” explained Valentina Kosova.
The guests of the meeting watched the photo exhibition “Trapped in a noose: Saving Seals” and the film “Changes”, dedicated to the problem of ocean pollution.
The reserve added that the photo exhibition is open until May 18 in Yelizovo (48B Ryabikova St.). You can sign up for an interactive exhibition tour by calling +7-924-791-89-74.
