Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Court has convicted a 50-year-old local resident in the case of illegal logging (Part 3 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), the Kamchatka Territory Prosecutor’s office told the KAMCHATKA-INFORM agency.

They said that last summer, a previously convicted man with two friends illegally cut down 42 stone birches in the forest area of the MKR. Zaozerny, and then they hacked the trees into chunks with axes.

“The accomplices prepared them for export for subsequent sale, but were caught red-handed. As a result of the crime, the city’s budget suffered environmental damage on a particularly large scale in the amount of 970 thousand rubles,” the department said.

The defendant received 2 years and 6 months in a high-security penal colony.

In December last year, two of his accomplices were sentenced to 2 years of probation.

The defendants are also required to pay the damage caused, and it was decided to confiscate the instruments of the crime – two axes and a chainsaw.

The verdict has not entered into legal force.
