Fry of rare fish species to be raised at the university in Kamchatka

The aquarium complex was first placed at the Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University. The installation provides a full cycle of growing cold–water fish, primarily salmon, 41 Region reports.

This equipment will allow debugging fish farming biotechnologies, raising juveniles of rare species to restore natural populations, as well as supplying fish for scientific research.

“Now a whole center for collective use for the study of Kamchatka’s biodiversity is being created at KamSU. It is being created with funds from the Priority 20/30 program at the expense of federal funding, as well as funds from the region and private foundations. A whole complex of laboratories is currently operating, and equipment has been installed in them. We have assembled an expedition base so that scientists can go to the points. One of the objects of this center for collective use is an aquarium facility where scientists from laboratories studying anthropogenic ecosystem dynamics can study salmon, and, first of all, Arctic char. It will be possible to engage in both breeding and studying of these fish,” said the acting rector of KamSU. Vitus Bering Olga Rebkovets.

The main feature of the center is that it is accessible not only to KamSU staff, but also to scientists who come from other scientific organizations. The complex consists of three independent aquariums. The first one is used for incubation of eggs and rearing of fry in the first months of life. The other two are intended for juveniles aged 3 months to 2 years, as well as maturing fish of a different age.
