Another bear has been eliminated in Kamchatka

Kamchatka hunting inspectors eliminated a young aggressive bear in Vilyuchinsk, the Ministry of Forestry of the Kamchatka Territory reported. Recall, on the eve of the unified dispatch service, a message was received about an attack by a 2-year-old brown bear on fishermen in the area of Dalnee Lake in the Yelizovsky district.

The predator went into the forest, and the interdepartmental rapid response group set up an ambush at the exit site.

“My friend and I went to a distant lake and fished there. By lunchtime, some kind of animal came out from the left bank in our direction. From a distance, I thought it was a wolverine, it was medium-sized and shaggy. Noticing us, a young bear ran towards us, which surprised me greatly. I thought everything would be peaceful and he would stop ten meters away, I even thought about taking a picture of him. But the predator came right at me! I started backing away to the snowmobile with the fishing rods, and I put the skimmer in front of me. The bear started spinning around me, trying to get behind me, but I didn’t turn my back on him. He opened his mouth, clearly intending to attack me, and began to rush. I fought him off with a slotted spoon; I was saved by the fact that there was a distance of about a meter between us. I shouted for my friend’s help, and we managed to drive him away with screams and an axe. He tried to attack us again, so we packed up and left the fishing area. A local resident driving by on a snowmobile drove the bear across the lake further into the forest, where he lay down in the area of the ski run. I immediately reported the bear attack to the dispatch service as soon as the opportunity arose,” said an eyewitness.

Also, the hunting inspector of the Kamchatka Territory Wildlife Protection Service received information from the EDDS of the city of Vilyuchinsk that a bear had been spotted in the area of the DYuSSh-2 ski track.

“It was not possible to immediately detect the predator at the meeting place; it retreated into the forest area. An ambush was organized, and on the morning of January 16, a hunting inspector shot an aggressive bear,” said Viktor Furyaev, director of the KGB “Service for the Protection of Wildlife and State Nature Reserves of the Kamchatka Territory.”

It is worth noting that pupils of the sports school are training on the ski slope; the bear was at a very close distance and posed a real threat to the life and health of children.

This morning, the bear re-entered the ski slope and the state hunting inspectors shot the aggressive predator.

“A round-the-clock watch was organized, as a result of which the bear was hunted down. It turned out to be a young bear under the age of two, severely emaciated. Everyone should be reminded that in such cases, no independent action should be taken. It is urgently necessary to notify the EDDS or call 112, the unified emergency number,” said Vsevolod Voropanov, head of the Forestry and Hunting Control (Supervision) Department of the Kamchatka Territory Ministry of Forestry.

The release of bears that have not gone into hibernation to populated areas in winter is not widespread; since the beginning of 2025, this is the third case of a staggering bear in the Kamchatka Territory.

The Ministry of Hunting and Forestry of the Kamchatka Territory reminds that when meeting with a bear, it is necessary to immediately inform about it by calling 112.

Recall that in the spring it is planned to count the number of bears in the territory near the Avacha agglomeration for the subsequent “regulation of the number of predators.” This is explained by the “invasion of bears on populated areas”, the authorities see the solution to the problem only in shooting predators.
