The Snow leopard and the rescuers of killer whales from Kamchatka were included in the list of winners of the international prize
The residents of Kamchatka, who saved the killer whales, and the Snow Leopard dog, who defended the owner from the bears, made their way to the number of laureates of the international award “My affectionate and necessary animal,” Kamchatka.Today reports with reference to the organizers.
The jury published the top 5 best participants in each nomination. It is among these laureates that the main winner and special prize winners will be determined. The results of the competition will be announced at the award ceremony, which will be held on April 18-19 in Zelenogradsk.
The story of the rescue of a family of killer whales thundered across the country in early October 2024. 70 residents, officials and rescuers of the Sobolevsky district prevented four exhausted marine animals from dying, stuck in the shallow waters of the estuary near the village of Ustyovoye.
“Their skin was covered with cracks, so to prevent dehydration, the killer whales were periodically watered with water. When the tide turned, the mammals were manually pushed to a great depth so that the animals could swim out to sea. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the killer whale family was rescued a few days later,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
As part of the competition, another nomination was announced – the “People’s Winner”. According to the results of the online voting, residents of Kamchatka took the fourth place among 44 applicants.
The German Shepherd Irbis also claims to win the competition. Last fall, during the invasion of bears, the dog rushed to the defense of its owner Vitaly during a walk through the Molodezhny neighborhood. The dog got into an unequal battle with four predators. The owner managed to escape and warned the neighbors about the beast. The heroic dog had almost no chance of surviving a fight with a group of bears. However, the wounded but undefeated Snow Leopard stumbled home, and the veterinarians managed to save the dog.
The shepherd and residents of Kamchatka claim to win in different categories. The snow leopard is “Responsible for those”, the inhabitants of the region are “Our brothers”.
