This recent discovery follows a significant ecological event in the Avacha Bay and Khalaktyrsky Beach region in late September 2020. During that period, local residents and surfers observed severe marine pollution, characterized by unusual water discoloration and a mass die-off of marine life. Individuals exposed to the water also experienced acute physical symptoms, including throat irritation and corneal burns.
Researchers investigating the 2020 incident identified the primary cause as a red tide – a hazardous phenomenon driven by accumulations of microscopic algae that release potent toxins into the marine ecosystem.
