The Kamchatka department of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources – Rosprirodnadzor – is demanding over 22.5 million rubles from the Palana-Ugol mining company for soil degradation.
Inspectors from the Far Eastern interregional department identified waste management violations during an audit of the Palanskoye brown coal deposit. The investigation revealed that overburden rock from the mining operations was deposited at a site not included in the national register of authorized waste disposal facilities.
Consequently, industrial waste covered an area exceeding 27,000 square meters of natural terrain. Regulators assessed the total environmental damage caused by the enterprise at more than 22.5 million rubles and issued a formal notice requesting voluntary financial compensation.
Should the company fail to remit the assessed damages on a voluntary basis, the regulatory authority will initiate litigation to recover the funds through the judicial system.
