The Kamchatka Territory plans to increase the share of geothermal energy in its total power generation to between 40 and 42 percent over the next five to ten years. Renewable energy sources currently supply approximately one-third of the electricity demand on the peninsula.
A central element of this capacity expansion will be the construction of the approved second phase of the Mutnovskaya geothermal power plant. The facility will utilize binary cycle technology, enabling the generation of electricity from lower-temperature thermal springs. This method increases plant efficiency without imposing additional environmental burdens.
Fully transitioning the regional energy system to geothermal resources remains unfeasible. The primary limitation is the geography of Kamchatka – thermal waters are concentrated in specific areas, whereas settlements are separated by hundreds of kilometers and require autonomous power supplies.
To ensure infrastructure reliability, the regional administration is focusing on a combination of natural gas and renewable energy sources. Replacing expensive imported coal and fuel oil with natural gas is intended to stabilize energy tariffs and meet the demands of remote districts where extending transmission lines from geothermal plants is technologically prohibitive.
