Kronotsky Reserve Acquires New Truck to Enhance Conservation

Specialists at the Kronotsky Nature Reserve have acquired a new UAZ Profi truck capable of delivering up to 1.5 tons of cargo to remote ranger stations. The vehicle will support conservation operations in the habitats of rare ungulates.

Designed for high off-road capability, the truck is suited for navigating difficult terrain, including dirt roads, mud, sand, and snow. It will be utilized to transport specialized equipment, generators, fuel, maintenance materials, and food supplies. Additionally, the vehicle will deploy operational groups into the field for routine patrols.

Since 2024, the Kronotsky Nature Reserve has partnered with the Foundation for the Conservation of Ecological Systems of the Far East and Siberia to implement a wild reindeer conservation project. The reserve is home to the only remaining large herd of the Kamchatka population, which is listed in the Red Data Book of Russia. The current population is estimated at approximately 800 individuals.

The wild reindeer remains a priority species for scientific study within the protected area. All field personnel are involved in collecting primary data, recording every encounter with the animals and documenting specific biological parameters.

Field observations indicate that in the first half of June, the animals mostly moved in small groups of 2–3 individuals, predominantly males. Larger herds only began to emerge toward the end of the month. One recorded herd of 21 animals included four newborn fawns and three large males, with the remaining individuals presumed to be females. These continuous observations are critical for developing a comprehensive understanding of reindeer biology under specific environmental conditions.
