The Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) has announced an upcoming electronic auction for eight prime marine and river plots located in the ecologically rich Kamchatka Krai. These coveted aquatic territories are specifically designated for recreational fishing, with successful bidders securing exclusive usage rights for a substantial 20-year period. The auction, poised to attract significant interest, is scheduled to take place on May 18 via the ‘Russian Auction House’ platform.
The geographical reach of the lots underscores the vastness and biodiversity of Russia’s Far East, a region of immense strategic and environmental importance. One of the plots is situated on Bering Island, a key ecological zone, while the remaining areas are strategically distributed across both the western and eastern coasts of the Kamchatka Peninsula. These include territories within the Tigilsky, Sobolevsky, Ust-Bolsheretsky, Olyutorsky, and Ust-Kamchatsky districts, encompassing a diverse range of marine and freshwater ecosystems. The size of the offered zones varies considerably, from compact areas of 0.8 hectares to extensive stretches spanning up to 253 hectares.
A primary focus for all auctioned aquatic sites is the organized harvesting of anadromous fish species, predominantly Pacific salmon, which are vital to the region’s ecosystem and economy. Furthermore, bidders who secure three of the designated marine plots will also be granted permission to organize recreational crab fishing, adding another layer of opportunity for resource utilization. The initial contract values for these leases are directly influenced by the specific characteristics and estimated potential of each water body, ranging from 379,000 to a notable 9.7 million Russian rubles.
This strategic move to transfer fishing zones into long-term lease arrangements allows the Russian state to enhance regulation and oversight of recreational fishing activities across its expansive Far Eastern territories. Companies awarded these valuable usage rights will not only be authorized to sell permits and access to recreational anglers but will also assume critical responsibilities for environmental stewardship. This includes diligent monitoring of bioresources to ensure sustainability and active engagement in coastal cleanup efforts, aligning economic development with ecological preservation and management.
Prospective participants interested in securing a foothold in Kamchatka’s thriving recreational fisheries sector must submit their applications by May 14. The upcoming auction represents a significant opportunity for private entities to engage in the sustainable development of Russia’s rich aquatic resources, while contributing to the regulated growth of tourism and leisure activities in one of the world’s most pristine and naturally abundant environments.
