In Russia’s rugged and picturesque Far East, a unique blend of traditional sport and community spirit is set to unfold. The Kamchatka Peninsula, renowned for its volcanic landscapes and pristine wilderness, will once again host the eagerly anticipated “Oktyabrsky Zubary” ice fishing competition. Scheduled for February 21st, this annual event will draw seasoned anglers and young enthusiasts alike to the icy waters near the village of Oktyabrsky in the Ust-Bolsheretsky district, promising a vibrant display of skill and patience on the frozen rivers.
Organized by the Kamchatka Regional Federation of Fishing Sports, the “Oktyabrsky Zubary” is more than just a local gathering; it encompasses both the Kamchatka Krai Championship and a dedicated youth festival, fostering a love for the sport among younger generations. Hopeful participants eager to test their luck in hunting for the prized “zubary” – a local term for the largest smelt specimens – can register starting February 2nd via the Federation’s official website, though spaces are limited, reflecting the event’s growing popularity.
The return of the competition carries particular significance this year, following a series of challenges. The previous year’s event was regrettably canceled due to impassable road conditions leading to Oktyabrsky, a stark reminder of the region’s harsh winter realities. Even in 2024, participants faced underwhelming catches; the victor managed only three smelt weighing a modest 190 grams, and notably, no “zubary” were landed. Despite a significant turnout of approximately 250 amateur anglers, including 200 veterans and 50 young devotees, the overall haul barely reached a dozen fish.
This year, organizers and participants alike harbor optimism that the two-year hiatus from consistent competition has allowed the smelt populations to recover and grow, promising more bountiful catches for the skilled Kamchatka anglers. These “koryushka,” as they are known, are highly sought after not only for their sporting challenge but also for their distinct fresh cucumber aroma, a culinary delight across the region. The resilience and expertise of local fishermen are well-known, and expectations are high for a successful and competitive event.
The “Oktyabrsky Zubary” competition boasts a relatively recent but impactful history, having first been inaugurated in 2017. The brainchild of veteran fisherman Oleg Moroz, the concept was enthusiastically embraced by the Oktyabrsky village administration. Its success quickly led to an expansion of its scope, achieving district championship status in 2019, before being elevated to a full regional event. In its most prosperous years, the competition has offered substantial rewards, with winners proudly taking home prizes as significant as imported snowmobiles, underscoring the prestige and competitive spirit associated with this beloved Kamchatkan tradition.
