In October 2024, the story of four killer whales that were stranded near the village of Ustyovoye in the Sobolevsky district spread throughout Russia.

The exhausted animals (two adults and two toddlers), stuck in shallow water in the estuary, were discovered by local residents. The mammals were exhausted and could not move.

The rescue operation lasted a total of 3 days. Up to 70 people took part in it at various intervals.

For their caring, the people who saved the killer whales were nominated for the international award “My affectionate and necessary Animal”.

The winners of this award are animals, thanks to which people were saved, as well as people who have distinguished themselves most in the protection of wildlife.
