In Avacha Bay, volunteers search for a baby killer whale in distress
In Kamchatka, volunteers from the Friends of the Ocean marine animal welfare group are searching for a baby killer whale wrapped in plastic tape, Kamchatka.Today reports.
The group’s telegram channel reports that so far the search has been fruitless.
“Today, the guys worked 7 hours at sea again. We walked from Cape Zelyony to the entrance to Avacha Bay. We met a lot of killer whales from different families there, but, unfortunately, we did not find a family with a confused cub. By the end of the day, the weather had turned bad again. The guys get tired in the evening, they don’t have time to talk about the workflow yet: it’s more about surveillance, not rescue,” the message says.
Earlier it was reported that in early July, a family of killer whales with a newborn cub under the age of six months was met in the area of Cape Shipunsky. A ring of packing tape was seen on the body of the newborn killer whale, tightly wrapped around the front of the body. According to biologists, injury poses an immediate threat to the life of the killer whale.
Volunteers from the Friends of the Ocean marine animal relief group arrived in Kamchatka from Sakhalin to rescue a baby killer whale in trouble.
According to Tatiana Ivkovich, a biologist and head of scientific expeditions of the Far Eastern FEROP killer whale project, the group members have experience in such situations, they helped to remove the rope from a humpback whale in Teriberki and regularly remove ropes from seals.
Skippers, captains of tourist, fishing and other vessels are asked to inform about the meeting places with Willy’s family in telegram @TatianaIvkovich. This is necessary to determine the location of the most likely encounter with the cub.
