Scientists in Kamchatka ask not to approach a killer whale trapped in a plastic garrote

The captains of sea vessels in Kamchatka were asked not to get close to the baby killer whale, which was trapped in a plastic garrote, so as not to frighten the animal. A plan to save the mammal is currently being developed, Kamchatka.Today reports with reference to the FEROP Telegram channel.

“We are asking for help from our supporters, as well as from everyone who lives and works in Kamchatka, and from interested people.  Boatmasters, captains of tourist, fishing and other vessels are kindly asked to inform about the meeting places with Willy’s family in the Telegram channel @TatianaIvkovich. This is necessary to determine the location of the most likely encounter with the cub. When meeting with this family, it is very important not to disturb the animals, not to come close, so that by the time the rescue operation is carried out, the group does not hide from people and allows rescuers to approach them. Under no circumstances should you dive into the water with the killer whales to free the cub,” the scientists ask.

On July 4 and 5, a family of killer whales with a newborn cub under the age of six months was met in the area of Cape Shipunsky. A ring of packing tape was seen on the body of the newborn killer whale, tightly wrapped around the front of the body.  According to biologists, injury is a consequence of the problem of ocean pollution from human waste and poses an immediate threat to the life of the killer whale. “Today, we consider the situation to be consistently negative,” the scientists said in a statement.
