The protected areas of Kamchatka are under the vigilant control of state inspectors. Bears act as voluntary guards of reservoirs, Kamchatka.Today reports.

According to the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, Pacific salmon spawn on the peninsula in all specially protected natural areas of federal significance. These are the Kronotsky and Koryaksky nature reserves, the South Kamchatka Nature Reserve.

Operational groups conduct patrols around the clock. Special attention is paid to the Ozernaya River basin, Kuril Lake, the Pacific coast of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the shores of the Bering Sea in Koryak.

Inspectors work in difficult conditions, monitoring even the most inaccessible spawning rivers and lakes. Their frequent companions now are bears, waiting for the mass movement of fish for feeding.

“Experienced state inspectors are on guard of the protected regime as part of the operational groups. We actively cooperate with local authorities, law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and heads of hunting farms interested in preserving and multiplying wild salmon, the most valuable resource of Kamchatka’s ecosystems,” said Vsevolod Yakovlev, Acting Director of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.
