Researchers Search for New Kokanee Salmon Forms in Lake Kronotsky

Scientists are conducting research on the kokanee population in Lake Kronotsky to investigate the potential existence of new forms of this fish. Kokanee – a landlocked variant of sockeye salmon – has naturally divided into planktivorous and benthivorous groups within the lake ecosystem. These distinct ecological groups exhibit divergent behaviors, spawning in entirely different locations and at varying times of the year.

The primary objective of the ongoing study is to understand the genetic divergence and determine exactly how significantly these individual populations differ from one another. Modern techniques in population genetics are being utilized to analyze the biological samples and map the evolutionary changes occurring within the isolated lake environment.

During the 2026 season, high water levels combined with unusual spawning periods restricted fieldwork, allowing for only a partial collection of the required genetic material. Comprehensive research and environmental sampling efforts will resume next year to complete the dataset and provide a definitive assessment of the developing kokanee forms.
