In Kamchatka, inspectors from the Federal Agency for Fishery intercepted a large shipment of illegal red caviar. During a raid on the Plotnikova River, a patrol stopped a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV containing nearly half a ton of the product in its trunk. The driver was unable to explain the origin of the cargo or provide the required shipping documents.
The total weight of the seized shipment – more than 450 kilograms – represents a calculated damage to the region’s aquatic biological resources exceeding 13.2 million rubles. Ecologically, this volume of processed caviar equates to thousands of harvested salmon that were removed from the ecosystem before they could reproduce during the current spawning season.
The Plotnikova River regularly attracts illegal harvesting activity due to the mass runs of Pacific salmon. This illicit fishing directly reduces wild fish populations and depletes the natural reserves of the peninsula. A criminal poaching case has been initiated, and the vehicle along with the plastic containers of caviar have been transferred to police custody pending the completion of the investigation.
