Ecological Upgrades Near Completion at Kamchatka’s Khalaktyrsky Beach

Development of modern, eco-friendly recreational infrastructure is advancing at Khalaktyrsky Beach along the Pacific coast near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The landscaping project is currently 70 percent complete, with the main phases of construction scheduled to finish by the end of the year.

The development plan encompasses a new route stretching approximately 4.5 kilometers. The primary walking area will feature a packed pedestrian trail and a boardwalk constructed from Siberian larch. A parallel bicycle path measuring about 1.5 kilometers in length is being built alongside the main trail.

Environmental sustainability and the preservation of the fragile Pacific coastal ecosystem remain the primary focus of the project. In areas where excavation is strictly prohibited, floating boardwalks are being installed without the use of driven piles or metal frameworks. This method ensures the complete preservation of the natural terrain and protects the delicate soil cover.

Beyond the trail network, the site will include a modern visitor center, an observation deck, two volleyball courts, and modular sanitary facilities. Designated recreation areas equipped with tables and fire pits are also under construction, with several locations situated near the local Rhino Rock formation.

Construction began in April. Following the project’s completion, the next crucial phase will involve establishing regular maintenance operations for the new facilities and enforcing a strict prohibition on all motorized vehicles – including cars, all-terrain vehicles, and motorcycles – entering the designated pedestrian zones.

Khalaktyrsky Beach is one of the most accessible recreational destinations on the Kamchatka Peninsula, attracting at least 40,000 people annually. The current infrastructure upgrades aim to accommodate this high volume of tourism while minimizing human impact on the surrounding natural environment.
