Kamchatka Lawyers Embrace Wildlife: Bar Association Adopts Zoo Fox

In a heartwarming display of community engagement and dedication to local wildlife, the Kamchatka Bar Association has officially taken a fox from the Yelizovo Zoo, named after Anatoly Shevlyagin, under its wing. This unique sponsorship highlights a growing trend of professional bodies stepping forward to support conservation efforts in Russia’s remote and ecologically rich Far East, known for its pristine nature and unique biodiversity.

Just days prior, the zoo launched its “Animal Guardianship” charitable campaign, seeking support for its resident creatures. Evgenia Shirokova, President of the regional Bar Association, swiftly answered the call, demonstrating her organization’s commitment to civic responsibility beyond legal chambers. Her prompt response underscored the community’s growing desire to safeguard the well-being of the zoo’s inhabitants.

Under the terms of this unusual guardianship agreement, the striking red fox has been bestowed with the name T’salai, a poignant choice that means “fox” in the indigenous Itelmen language of Kamchatka. This gesture not only provides crucial financial backing but also honors the rich cultural heritage of the peninsula. The lawyers have pledged a monthly contribution of 50,000 rubles to cover the upkeep and welfare of their new ward, ensuring T’salai receives the best possible care, a significant commitment reflecting their dedication.

This act of compassion by the Kamchatka legal community serves as an inspiring example for other regions, showcasing how local professionals can play a vital role in supporting animal welfare and environmental conservation. The Yelizovo Zoo continues to welcome support for its animals, with interested individuals and organizations able to reach out via local contact numbers +7 (41531) 2-11-09 or +7 (41531) 6-21-92, or by email at zooparkpk@yandex.ru, to participate in similar guardianship programs.
