The implementation of a project aimed at preserving the unique biodiversity of the Koryak Nature Reserve in Kamchatka by strengthening anti-poaching measures continues. This important initiative is supported by the Charity Foundation “Beautiful Children in a Beautiful World”.
Special attention is paid to the Parapolsky Valley, a cluster site of the Koryak Nature Reserve, which is one of the key migration hubs in the Kamchatka Territory for birds of the wetland complex. During seasonal flights, tens of thousands, and possibly a much larger number of different species of geese and ducks find temporary shelter and food here, turning this area into a real bird paradise.
“For example, such rare species as the Aleutian kazarka, piskul, kloktun, and Siberian gaga have been noted here. In addition to the migratory species, the whooper swan, rare for the region, and the taiga hummingbird and red-necked grebe, listed in the Red Book of Russia, nest. In addition to the geese, there are also red–book species of sandpipers – the sandpiper, the Far Eastern curlew, the great and Icelandic sandpipers. And among the birds of prey are the white–tailed eagle and the gyrfalcon. In addition to the Red Book species, about 20 species of geese, 3 species of loons, about 10 species of gulls, and more than 10 species of waders are found as nesting and flying birds on the territory of the Parapolsky Valley,” said Dmitry Pilipenko, Deputy Director for Science at the Kronotsky State Nature Reserve.
The Parapolsky Valley has the status of a wetland of international importance, as it is the largest concentration of waterfowl and aquatic birds in northeast Asia. Starting in 2023, conservation measures in the Koryak Nature Reserve are carried out with the support of the Beautiful Children in a Beautiful World Foundation. The successful participation and victory in the competition of the project “Conservation of the territory of the Koryak Nature Reserve, its flora and fauna, by protecting this territory from poaching” allowed the purchase of additional modern equipment. This technical equipment is designed to enhance the protection of the northernmost specially protected natural area of federal significance in the Kamchatka Territory, contributing to a more effective fight against illegal activities.
