Pastures in the north of the peninsula are covered with thick ice crusts, which can lead to a mass death of deer, the regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told Kamchatka.Today.
According to the Kamchatka Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, at the end of March, in the vicinity of the village of Tilichiki in the Olyutorsky district, the thickness of snow crusts reached dangerous values.
The situation has not changed in April. The thickness of the snow crusts has already reached 55 millimeters, and the situation is unlikely to change in the first ten days of May. This can lead to the death of deer from starvation. They simply cannot get to the yagel, which is under the snow, if there is a crust of ice on top.
Recall that in April 2021, there was a mass death of reindeer near the village of Ust-Khairyuzovo. The cause of the deaths of more than 350 animals was starvation. The thickness of the snow cover reached 40-50 centimeters, and there was water and ice under the snow.
