Officials from the Control Department of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city administration have identified potential soil contamination from petroleum products near the Dachny garage complex. Investigators discovered black, tar-like patches emitting a strong odor around barrels labeled as containing fuel and lubricants. A nearby tank used for fuel storage and transportation also exhibited visible leakage around its lid.
Inspectors have filed a formal incident report, as the municipal Control Department lacks direct regulatory authority over oil spills. Further environmental assessments will be conducted as needed – a procedural step outlined by Control Department head Sergey Sheremenko. Working in coordination with local police, municipal officials successfully identified the landowner later in the day to facilitate pending administrative decisions.
Documentation regarding the site has been forwarded to environmental oversight agencies – specifically the regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, and the environmental prosecutor’s office – to accurately evaluate the ecological impact.
If the contamination with hazardous substances is officially confirmed, the property owner will face financial penalties. The responsible party will also be legally required to compensate for the environmental degradation and undertake comprehensive soil remediation efforts to restore the affected site.
