Russian environmental authorities have uncovered a significant act of illegal waste dumping in the pristine Kamchatka Krai, a region renowned for its unique biodiversity and volcanic landscapes. The Ministry of Natural Resources for the Kamchatka Krai announced that preliminary assessments indicate environmental damage exceeding 30 million rubles, an amount equivalent to over $330,000 USD, stemming from construction debris illicitly deposited near a sensitive coastal area.
The illicit landfill, situated close to the GSC No. 89 cooperative in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, specifically lies within a crucial water protection zone bordering a local bay. The investigation revealed that a contractor, engaged in the demolition of a residential building on Ryabikovskaya Street, was responsible for unlawfully discarding unsorted construction waste directly into this ecologically vulnerable area.
Specialists from the regional Ministry of Natural Resources conducted an on-site inspection, meticulously mapping the affected soil area and estimating the sheer volume of unsorted debris.
