Kamchatka’s Geyser Valley: A Timeless Discovery Recalled in Special Screening

The renowned Kronotsky Nature Reserve in Russia’s far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is set to commemorate a pivotal moment in geographical exploration with a special film screening. On April 14th, marking the 85th anniversary of the first geyser’s discovery in the legendary Valley of Geysers, the reserve’s Museum of Nature will host a showing of the historic documentary ‘Where Spring Winters’.

The Valley of Geysers, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as one of the planet’s most magnificent geyser fields, a breathtaking testament to Kamchatka’s unparalleled volcanic activity. This commemorative film offers a unique glimpse into the origins of this discovery, chronicling the journey of the valley’s trailblazing explorer, Tatiana Ustinova. In 1979, Ustinova, who first unearthed this natural wonder alongside senior observer Anisifor Krupenin, returned to Kamchatka specifically for the filming of this documentary, revisiting the unique landscape she helped introduce to the world.

Produced by Kamchatka Television, the documentary provides an invaluable historical record. Viewers will witness volcanologists conducting research in the Valley just 38 years after its initial detection, observing the scientific equipment utilized during that era. More importantly, the film offers a rare opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from those intimately involved in one of the 20th century’s most significant geographical revelations, encapsulating the spirit of exploration and scientific inquiry that defines our understanding of Earth’s dynamic processes.

This special screening, taking place in Elizovo, serves not only as a poignant tribute to the past but also highlights the enduring importance of preserving such extraordinary natural heritage. It resonates globally, reminding us of the timeless allure of discovery and the vital role of protected areas like the Kronotsky Reserve in safeguarding our planet’s wonders for future generations.
