The timing of the start of one of the key fishing seasons, commercial salmon fishing, has been determined in Kamchatka. The relevant decision was made by the regional commission dealing with the regulation of the extraction of anadromous fish species, that is, those species that migrate from the sea to freshwater rivers for reproduction. For the Petropavlovsk-Komandorskaya subzone, which includes the territories of the Aleutian and Ust-Kamchatsky districts, the launch date of the mine is set for June 1.
In the Ust-Kamchatsky district, fishermen will be able to start fishing in the Kamchatka River basin directly from the first day of summer. In the waters of the Kamchatka Bay, the extraction of valuable fish species will be allowed a little later, starting on June 4. At the same time, special attention is paid to ensuring the free passage of fish to the spawning grounds. For this purpose, a regime of so-called “passing days” is introduced, when fishing is temporarily suspended. So, there will be two such days in the Kamchatka Gulf every week, with the exception of the second half of June, when the total number of passing days will be six for the period from 16 to 30. On the Kamchatka River, three passing days are set weekly to allow breeders to spawn.
In addition, to ensure the most favorable conditions for the main course of salmon spawning, a longer period of silence is introduced. Starting at midnight on July 26, a two-week break in fishing activities will be organized. All these regulatory measures are aimed at achieving a balance between the economic interests of the fishing industry and the need to preserve and reproduce valuable populations of Kamchatka salmon, which is of paramount importance for the ecosystem and sustainable development of the region.
