The mass spawning of sockeye salmon is currently underway at Lake Sarannoye – the largest freshwater body on Bering Island and the primary sockeye spawning ground within the Commander Islands archipelago. Shoals of the salmon return to this specific location to reproduce after migrating thousands of kilometers across the ocean.
Upon entering freshwater, the fish cease feeding and undergo significant physiological transformations. Their silver scales deteriorate, and the skin thins to reveal bright red flesh, making the salmon highly visible from the shoreline. Male sockeye experience the most pronounced physical changes – their overall body shape becomes distorted, jaws elongate and curve, and teeth begin to protrude outwards.
During this period, the lake waters are densely populated with the red-backed fish. This spawning event marks the end of their biological life cycle. After reproducing, the sockeye salmon die, and their remains subsequently serve as a vital food source for the local wildlife inhabiting the island.
