Access Opens to the First of Kamchatka’s Blue Lakes

Access to the first of the three Blue Lakes in Kamchatka is now open. The ascent to the mountain cirque is currently covered entirely in snow, providing stable walking conditions. Trail infrastructure is also being improved – including the construction of small bridges – to facilitate better access along the route.

Discovered in 1960 by a research expedition, the system of three mountain lakes is located at an altitude of approximately 840 meters above sea level. The lakes fill natural depressions within a mountain cirque and are interconnected by a series of small streams. The outflow from the final lake forms the source of the Polovinka River, which eventually flows through the town of Yelizovo in its lower reaches.

The lakes derive their name from the unique optical effect created by the combination of clear water and submerged ice. As sunlight penetrates the water, the submerged ice reflects the light, giving the surface of the lakes a distinct and vibrant blue coloration.
