On December 26, 1995, the northernmost specially protected natural area of federal significance was created in Kamchatka, then in the Koryak Autonomous Okrug. The main protected areas are – wetlands, where a huge number of birds live, including Red Book species, marine ecosystems of the Bering Sea and Beringian forest-tundra.
The Koryak Nature Reserve consists of three cluster areas: Cape Goven, Lavrova Bay and Parapolsky Dol. Cape Gauvin – house of seabirds and mammals. Often variegated and ringed seals, lionfish and coats enter the sea area. Its decoration is – real fjords. The shores of Lavrova Bay – are rocks with flowing waterfalls and sandy beaches. Salmon enter the mouths of rivers flowing into the bay and feed bears, foxes, and wolverines. You can find whales in the water area.
Parapol Dol – is one of the largest reserves of sea and waterfowl in Northeast Asia. It is included in the List of wetlands of international importance protected by the Ramsar Convention. Within the boundaries of the Koryak Highlands, part of which is part of the Koryak Nature Reserve, lives the largest population of gyrfalcons in Russia.
Since 2015, the Koryak Nature Reserve has been managed by the Federal State Budgetary Institution «Kronotsky State Reserve». And since 2023, the «Beautiful Children in a Beautiful World» charity foundation has been helping to preserve the riches of northern nature. Victory in the project competition «Preservation of the territory of the Koryak Nature Reserve, its fauna and flora, by protecting this territory from poaching» made it possible to purchase additional modern equipment for the protection of the northernmost protected areas of federal significance in the Kamchatka Territory.
«We are grateful to the Foundation for its active assistance in many of our environmental projects. Considering the most difficult terrain, the huge areas of the Koryak Nature Reserve and the difficult weather conditions in which employees of the conservation service have to work, this assistance is invaluable», – emphasized Vsevolod Yakovlev, Acting Director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution «Kronotsky State Reserve».
In September alone, the task force traveled 73 kilometers on foot, – 120 kilometers by boat by sea. No violations of the protected regime were found. In addition, throughout the summer field season, state inspectors conducted preventive conversations with the population of the village of Tilichiki, where the ethno-ecological center and training class of the Koryak Nature Reserve are located. First of all, with the younger generation. Patrolling of the territory is carried out as usual.
