Far East Russia: Kamchatka Valley Shuts for Elite Dog Sled Race

The pristine and often challenging Nalychevo Valley in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is set to temporarily close its natural wonders to visitors as it prepares to host a significant national event: the “Beringia. Avacha” dog sled race. This measure, announced by the “Volcanoes of Kamchatka” Natural Parks Network via Kamchatka.Today, underscores the scale and intensity of the upcoming competition, drawing attention to a region renowned for its untouched wilderness and geothermal landscapes.

From February 6th to 16th, access to the “Nalychevo” valley via the Pinachevo cordon will be completely restricted. During this period, the booking of accommodation at the Central cordon will also be unavailable. While other tourist routes within the park remain open until February 6th, the comprehensive closure of the primary access route aims to ensure the utmost safety for participants and facilitate the meticulous preparation of the challenging race track.

The “Beringia. Avacha” All-Russian Sled Dog Sports competition is scheduled to run from February 8th to 15th. This year’s event will see 23 experienced athletes from seven different regions across Russia pit their skills and their canine teams against Kamchatka’s formidable terrain. The arduous route, stretching approximately 300 kilometers, traverses demanding mountain passes, including the picturesque Pinachevsky, and winds through the heart of the “Nalychevo” Natural Park, presenting a true test of endurance and teamwork.

The official opening ceremony and the launch of the first stage of the race are set for February 8th at 11:00 AM, at the Vitaly Fatyano Biathlon Complex. This annual event not only showcases the ancient tradition of dog sledding but also highlights Kamchatka’s unique role as a hub for extreme sports and ecotourism, drawing national focus to its unparalleled natural beauty and the spirit of adventure that defines Russia’s remote Far East.
