Over two thousand people recently gathered at the “Zapovednaya Kamchatka” eco-center to celebrate the 91st anniversary of the globally significant Kronotsky Nature Reserve, alongside the first anniversary of its modern visitor center. This vibrant public event, held in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, underscored the reserve’s enduring appeal and its crucial role in international biodiversity conservation efforts.
The “Open Doors Day” proved to be a dynamic and highly interactive experience for attendees of all ages. Alena Shashkova, an ecotourism guide at the eco-center, remarked on the enthusiastic engagement: “The Open Doors Day was very dynamic. We gladly answered numerous questions from guests, and then we ourselves asked questions to participants in our quiz. It was a pleasant surprise that many know the nature of Kamchatka and the Kronotsky Reserve quite well. For correct answers, erudite participants received tokens, which they then exchanged for postcards with photos of the protected nature.” This direct interaction fostered a deeper connection between visitors and the unique Kamchatkan ecosystem, highlighting the importance of public environmental education.
From adults to children, all activities saw immense popularity. Guests explored the world of volcanoes, geysers, and diverse flora and fauna through immersive sensory experiences, including touch and sound. A particular highlight was the opportunity to “shake hands” with Uhtysh, the beloved bear cub mascot, whose charm, along with life-sized animal sculptures, made them central figures in countless photo sessions. The event also featured “Kamchatka. A Fox’s Tale,” a captivating photo exhibition showcasing the stars of the documentary film “The Fiery Fox,” which was filmed within the reserve. Younger visitors enjoyed a creative master class, crafting appliqués depicting fox tracks in the snow.
Beyond the festive atmosphere, the celebration served as a powerful reminder of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve’s paramount importance on a global scale. As a designated member of the international network of biosphere reserves, Kronotsky is a cornerstone for critical biological diversity and a beacon for climate research. The reserve is currently at the forefront of several vital conservation initiatives, including dedicated efforts to protect Kamchatka’s last significant wild reindeer herd—a species facing mounting threats—and ongoing comprehensive studies of the Okhotsk Sea population of gray whales, contributing essential data to global marine conservation strategies.
