The Kamchatka Territory has been designated as a federal platform for the development and implementation of advanced technologies in the field of electric power industry. This strategic step turns the region into an all-Russian testing ground for innovative solutions that can be scaled to the whole country in the future. This was stated by Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev during his visit to the peninsula.
The Mutnovskaya geothermal power plant became the central element of this large-scale project. This facility, with an installed capacity of 50 MW, already uses a unique technology for direct energy production from steam supplied through pipelines from the bowels of the earth. The coolant for the station is extracted from wells of the Mutnovsky steam hydrotherm field, which makes energy production environmentally friendly and independent of fossil fuel supplies. According to the minister, this particular station will become the base for testing new approaches and technologies as part of a “pilot project for the whole country.”
The initiative is not limited to technological development only. Kamchatka should also become a forge of personnel for Russia’s new energy industry. It is planned to create an educational and scientific base in the region to train highly qualified specialists who will be able to work with modern power plants and develop this area in other parts of the country.
Special attention will be paid to the revision and modernization of projects developed during the Soviet era. Experts will analyze the scientific heritage of the USSR in the field of geothermal energy in order to adapt it to modern technological capabilities.
