In Kamchatka, the first bear to leave its den was seen on the territory of the Kronotsky Reserve this year, the reserve’s press service told Kamchatka.Today.

The meeting took place on the shore of Olga Bay in Kronotsky Bay during an inspection of the coastal territory. The staff of the reserve noticed the bear from afar. The beast, which was dozing in the snow, watched the observers go and continued to rest.

“After a prolonged cyclone, the weather allowed passage along the coast of Olga Bay. We set up camera traps in places where animals constantly pass, and observed a pair of white-shouldered eagles. At the end of the route, we saw the first bear this year. Judging by the footprints, he had already gone down to the ocean shore some time ago – there was a better chance of finding something to eat. The bear was asleep, they are not very active after leaving the dens. They didn’t bother him and went on their way.” – Dmitry Balakirev, state inspector of the Kronotsky State Nature Reserve, told.

Recall that the mass release of brown bears from their dens in Kamchatka begins in mid-April, but in March, as a rule, single adults already appear. These are usually males. Because they consume subcutaneous fat faster, they begin to experience hunger earlier than the females.

After their winter sleep, bears feed on beached fish and dead marine mammals, they can catch weak seals or sea otters, and at low tide they eat bivalves.
