Construction of a geothermal plant in Kamchatka has been frozen

Zarubezhneft’s subsidiary ZN Geotherm has postponed the construction of a geothermal power plant in Kamchatka, Interfax writes with reference to the company’s materials.

Previously, Zarubezhneft planned to build the Kamchatka thermal power plant in 2026-2028, and the stages of its commissioning were calculated from 2028 to 2034. Now the approximate date for the construction of the power facility is in 2029-2030, and the launch is even later.

The company clarifies that at the moment, the confirmation of reserves of geothermal deposits in Kamchatka in the area of the planned station is at a low level. In 2025-2027, 3 exploration wells will be drilled, and in 2028-2029, it is planned to select a site for the site.

The company is currently conducting geological exploration of the geothermal energy resource base, which will continue until 2029. After that, the construction of the station will begin.

“Obtaining taxable profits from sales proceeds will be possible only in 2031, after the completion and commissioning of the first geothermal plant, and the conclusion of contracts for the supply of heat and/or electricity,” the company’s materials say.

Currently, there are only four geothermal power plants operating in Russia with a total capacity of 81.4 MW: three in Kamchatka and one in the Kuril Islands.
