The Commander Islands National Park has sent another batch of plastic to the mainland for recycling – more than 150 kg of compressed PET bottles and more than 150 liters of plastic wrap, Kamchatka.Today reports.

According to the national park, all this will become secondary resources, and will not turn into garbage flying around the tundra of Bering Island: “Sorting plastic by color and type, as well as discarding contaminated items requiring additional cleaning, is a separate laborious process. However, we understand the importance of this work, and we also see that more and more villagers are donating secondary resources to us, and this, like nothing else, shows the effectiveness of the park’s responsible waste management program “Green Commanders”.

As previously reported by Kamchatka.Today, the collection of recyclable garbage on Bering Island began in 2022. Bottles of water, carbonated drinks and milk, packages of shampoo, shower gels, detergents, food containers, disposable tableware, metal (aluminum) cans, etc. are accepted from the local population in the national park. The collected waste is transported from the island to the mainland for processing.

Bering Island of the Commander Archipelago is located in the North Pacific Ocean, 775 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The island’s only settlement, the village of Nikolskoye, is home to less than 700 people (this is the entire population of the Aleutian Municipal District). The entire island is located within the boundaries of the Commander Islands National Park. The island can only be reached by plane or sea transport.
