Brown bears are gathering to feed at Kuril Lake in the South Kamchatka Federal Sanctuary during the peak of the sockeye salmon spawning season. Alongside adult individuals, young bears are utilizing this period to develop their fishing abilities.
Recently, a two-year-old bear successfully caught a fish during a foraging attempt. The juvenile quickly dragged the catch into the nearby bushes to consume the meal in isolation. In this environment, bears must remain vigilant – larger or more dominant individuals frequently attempt to steal food from younger counterparts.
Tourists observing the wildlife during a boat excursion witnessed the successful catch and vocalized their encouragement for the young bear.
Kuril Lake supports the largest reproducing population of sockeye salmon in Asia, providing a crucial food source for the region’s wildlife. Female bears regularly bring their cubs to this protected reservoir to ensure they are adequately nourished and to teach them essential survival and fishing skills.
