Scientists from the Polar Branch of the Russian Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography conducted a comprehensive expedition in the Barents and White seas aboard the research vessel Professor Boyko from June 30 to July 24. The research team focused on the biology, spatial distribution, and habitat of the red king crab, surveying a vast area across Russian territorial and internal marine waters.
During the voyage, marine biologists analyzed key characteristics of the crab population. This assessment evaluated size and sex demographics, sexual maturity, fecundity, shell condition, and the prevalence of diseases or parasites. The expedition also incorporated broader environmental assessments – including parallel oceanographic and hydrobiological studies – alongside direct observations of marine mammal distribution and abundance.
Upon finalizing the data processing, the research institute will develop specific recommendations for fishery management. The resulting environmental reports will provide actionable guidelines and population forecasts of varying lead times to support the sustainable regulation of marine resources in the region.
