High Parasite Levels Detected in Kamchatka Sea Flounder

Specialists at the Kamchatka branch of the federal institution APK Natsryba have recorded a high parasite load in a batch of sea flounder. During routine epizootic monitoring, experts analyzed twenty fish caught in the waters off the peninsula. Laboratory test results showed that the internal organs of all examined samples were affected by various types of helminths.

The presence of parasites in the internal tissues of wild fish is a natural phenomenon in marine environments. Flounder populations develop in open ecosystems where helminths form an integral part of the food chain. In their natural habitat, marine organisms regularly act as intermediate or definitive hosts for parasitic fauna – a process that establishes a standard biological background.

Fish testing is conducted to continuously monitor the quality of raw materials entering the regional market and to prevent veterinary and sanitary risks. Recently, staff at the Kamchatka center completed an inspection of more than six hundred batches of salmon caviar. Following these tests, one-third of the inspected product volume was declared hazardous to consumer health.
