Scientists from the Kamchatka branch of the Pacific Institute of Geography and the Magadan Institute of Biological Problems of the North have completed an ornithological expedition on the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Researchers investigated the autumn bird migration within the Ust-Kamchatsky district, an area that serves as a transit corridor for migratory species. The primary objective of the fieldwork was to collect data on species composition, population numbers, and flight routes before the birds depart for their wintering grounds.
Trapping and banding served as the primary monitoring methods. During the expedition, researchers set up nets that captured more than 1,400 individuals across 20 different species. Tagging enables specialists to track population movements, record migration timing, and assess the physical condition of the birds at various stages of their journey.
The most abundant species recorded were the dusky warbler, Middendorff’s grasshopper warbler, bluethroat, and yellow-breasted bunting. The yellow-breasted bunting holds a special conservation status and is listed in the Red Data Book of Russia due to a global population decline, though its numbers on the Kamchatka Peninsula remain stable and are regularly observed. Researchers also documented the presence of the little bunting – a species that nests in the northern districts of the region but typically migrates through the mainland of the Russian Far East.
In addition to small passerines, expedition members conducted visual monitoring of migrating waders and other waterfowl utilizing the coastal zones for rest. The collected materials will supplement long-term databases regarding the state of the avifauna in Northeast Asia and will help accurately track environmental changes within the regional ecosystems.
