Over the past three years, 72 sunken vessels have been raised and dismantled in Kamchatka Krai, accounting for nearly 90 percent of all previously identified shipwrecks in Avacha Bay.
The region currently leads the Russian Far East in marine debris removal efforts. Governor Vladimir Solodov presented these figures during a meeting with Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Alexander Kozlov.
The salvage operations are conducted under the federal General Cleanup project. Engineering teams are now executing the technical operations required to extract the remaining vessels – primarily large and hard-to-reach shipwrecks – from the seabed.
Regional authorities indicated that the extensive recovery work has mitigated historical maritime waste that previously posed environmental risks to the local marine ecosystem.
During the meeting, the officials also addressed the upcoming ecological restoration of Kultuchnoye Lake in central Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The water remediation project is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will span two years.
