A mass die-off of seabirds along the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula has been linked to recent volcanic activity. Volcanic ash emissions caused localized iron pollution in the surrounding waters, compromising avian immune systems and rendering the birds highly vulnerable to parasitic infections. Regional environmental agencies reached these preliminary conclusions following a comprehensive analysis of marine water samples.
The incident first gained attention in mid-summer when residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky documented deceased guillemots, puffins, and cormorants along the coastline. Carcasses were primarily discovered at Khalaktyrsky Beach and the adjacent Pionerskaya Bay. While environmental inspectors initially recorded approximately fifteen dead specimens on the shore, the localized death toll eventually climbed into the dozens.
Initial assessments attributed the mortality to helminth infections, but subsequent laboratory diagnostics revealed an underlying chemical anomaly. Municipal authorities have since cleared the affected coastal areas of biological debris, and sanitary conditions within the bay have returned to normal parameters.
