The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources has filed a lawsuit against the municipal administration of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The environmental agency is demanding 871,858 rubles in compensation for soil degradation within the water protection zone of Seroglazka Bay. The case is currently registered with the Arbitration Court of the Kamchatka Territory.
The petroleum contamination was discovered last September on Kosmonavtov Street during repair works on the Pier Buyok fuel pipeline. Environmental inspectors identified an oily film covering a 70.7-square-meter area in an excavation pit. Subsequent laboratory analysis of soil samples confirmed that the concentration of petroleum products significantly exceeded normal background levels.
Prior attempts to resolve the financial dispute through a mandatory claim process were unsuccessful – the municipal administration refused to satisfy the compensation demands out of court. As a result, a preliminary court hearing to address the environmental damage has been scheduled for September 16.
