The juvenile marine mammals are undergoing rapid development and beginning to interact with their local environment. Northern fur seal pups practice swimming in shallow tidal pools and engage in physical interactions with one another. Similarly, Steller sea lion pups are developing their mobility by navigating the rocky terrain and practicing initial vocalizations.
Despite their increasing activity, the juveniles remain in close proximity to the adult females. Mothers closely monitor their offspring, relying on specific scents and vocal cues for identification, and physically guide the pups when they stray. This rearing period is crucial for the juveniles to build sufficient physical strength before entering the open ocean.
Visitors observing the natural habitat are required to maintain a safe distance from the rookeries – a standard protocol designed to prevent disturbance to the marine mammals during this critical developmental phase.
