Heavy winter snowfall continues to impact the South Kamchatka Sanctuary into mid-summer. Sustained warm temperatures over recent weeks have accelerated snowmelt on the surrounding volcanoes, leading to significant increases in regional water levels.
Localized flooding at Kuril Lake and the Ozernaya River has not disrupted wildlife excursions. While visitors require rubber boots to navigate certain trails – such as the routes to the Sypuchiy Kamen tract and Severnaya Bay – tourist activity proceeds as scheduled.
The elevated water levels have not hindered opportunities to observe the local brown bear population. Bears – including solitary adults and mothers with cubs – remain active and visible around the entire perimeter of Kuril Lake against the backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes.
To maintain access and safety, reserve personnel have constructed wooden walkways over the inundated areas. These adaptations secure uninterrupted passage to the ranger stations and the primary piers utilized for boat tours.
